Ending Somalia Election Stalemate and Averting Government Shutdown.

As of March 15, 2022, the election deadline is rapidly approaching and is at risk of being missed, with over 50 parliamentary seats still unfilled. While the election for the 54-member Upper House was concluded in November 2021, as of March 10, only 222 of the 275 members of the House of the People have been elected. The election process has now extended over nine months, with no clear end in sight.

This extended delay has deepened Somalia’s political and constitutional crisis, creating widespread uncertainty, especially in the face of severe droughts in various regions, rising insecurity, and the looming threat of a government shutdown.

To break the election impasse and prevent a government shutdown, it is crucial that both houses of Parliament be inaugurated without further delay. This will allow the newly elected members to elect their respective speakers, adopt an interim national budget, and select a president. Additionally, the National Consultative Council should urgently meet to find a political solution to the ongoing crises in Gedo.

In conclusion, swift action is essential to restore stability, tackle the mounting challenges, and ensure the continuity of the political process.
