Somalia Election Gridlock – IC intervention needed

8 March 2021

Today marks one month since President Farmajo’s term expired, and Somalia’s political crisis is deepening with no clear solution in sight. Since February 8, President Farmajo has called for three separate meetings with the Federal Member States (FMS) to address the election impasse, but these efforts have failed to yield any progress. On February 22, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on Somalia, urging all stakeholders to come together and seek a compromise. Somalia’s international partners have consistently called for the urgent finalization of the electoral model by all signatories of the 17 September Agreement.

However, recent dialogue between opposition groups and the Prime Minister has collapsed, further intensifying the crisis. The Parliament, which holds constitutional authority to resolve the current political deadlock, remains largely inactive. At the heart of this protracted impasse is a power struggle over who controls the selection process.

While the situation remains dire, it is not too late to reverse course and prevent Somalia from descending into an even deeper crisis. However, this will require decisive and timely intervention from the international community to help facilitate a resolution.
