Somalia faces a dire situation: a second wave of COVID-19 devastates its people amidst escalating insecurity, while political infighting preoccupies its leadership and international partners. Already struggling with insecurity, humanitarian crises, political instability, and poor infrastructure, Somalia now faces the pandemic’s exacerbation of existing economic and human challenges. An effective government and community response is crucial to containing the virus’s spread. Building upon the Aaran Center’s June 2020 report on COVID-19’s socioeconomic impact in Somalia, this paper examines the intersection of COVID-19 and political processes in Somalia and offers several policy recommendations.
